Art & Geneva- Berthelier Statue

In the early 2023, I used to stop by Bel-Air weekly once during my LaFarce Haul. I noticed this statue and was always amused by the posture and the story behind it. This time, I went close and tried reading the relevant details around it. This is a statue of Philibert Berthelier. Back in those days when Geneva town was under the Duke of Savoy, the duke nominated his cousin as Bishop in 1513. Philibert rebelled against the bishop and was under the threat of punishment. In 1517, he fled to Fribourg. And when he was given a safe conduct to Geneva, he began his secret meetings for rebellion. Bishop of Geneva tried to cut down the rebellion and tried punishing him. In 1519, he was suggested to run away to Fribourg by his friends. Philibert rejected it. On August 23, 1519, he was trialed for a treason against the Duke of Savoy. He was  found guilty and got punished on the same day.

He was executed in the same place where his statue is present. He points his finger to this latin text, the sentences he carved in his prison cell- "I shall not die but live, and I will uphold the Lord's work."

There seems to be a ferret engraved which I couldn't spot. Apparently, he used to carry one even during his prison days.  There's an infinity motif on top right of his head, I couldn't find any story behind it. Next time, I walk across, will pay my regards to Mr. Philibert.
